Steve Maïa Caniço case: The police commissioner referred to the criminal court
The Steve Maïa Caniço case, named after the young man who drowned after a police operation, has taken a new twist. The police commissioner in charge of the operation has been brought to justice.
On Tuesday December 19th, the Rennes public prosecutor’s office announced that a police commissioner had been referred to the criminal court for “manslaughter”. Commissioner Chassaing was in charge of the controversial police operation during which Steve Maïa Caniço drowned in the Loire during the 2019 Fête de la Musique in Nantes.
In February 2022, INDEX had produced an independent expert video report commissioned by the examining magistrate in charge of the case.
